Live Translation on iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS 26 Tahoe supports a handful of languages, according to Apple.
Live Translation is Supported by Apple Intelligence Devices Only and Offers Limited Support on Apple Watch
Live Translation is the most Star Trek thing any tech company can do. The ability to just talk in your native language and have everything translated on the fly is a huge barrier taken down.
Apple is bringing Live Translation to iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices with the new iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS 26 Tahoe updates, and it sounds very promising. Interestingly, it is coming to Apple Watch as well with watchOS 26, but more on that later.
However, there are a couple of things everyone should know.
Apple Intelligence is a Strict Requirement
First of all, this is an Apple Intelligence feature, which means you need an iPhone 15 Pro or higher, an iPad with a M-series chip, or a Mac with Apple silicon inside.
If you don’t have that, you are not getting Live Translation.
Limited Languages are Supported
Secondly, the feature does not work with every single language out there. It only supports a limited number of languages across the Messages, FaceTime and Phone apps.
In the Messages app, the following languages are supported on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch:
- Chinese (Simplified)
- English (UK, U.S.)
- French (France)
- German
- Italian
- Japanese
- Korean
- Portuguese (Brazil)
- Spanish (Spain)
Interestingly, you need at least a Series 9 or later Apple Watch or the Apple Watch Ultra 2 in order to get access to Live Translation on your wrist with an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone paired to it.
In Phone or FaceTime, these languages are supported by Live Translation:
- English (UK, U.S.)
- French (France)
- German
- Portuguese (Brazil)
- Spanish (Spain)
If you’re picking up a phone call using your Apple Watch, Live Translation won’t work. It is limited to the Messages app only.
The bottom line is, Live Translation works across Messages, FaceTime, and Phone apps on Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices. On the Apple Watch, it offers support in the Messages app only, that too on select models.
