As expected, WhatsApp no longer supports the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus smartphones.
WhatsApp has Officially Ended Support for iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus – Time to Either Upgrade or Switch to a Newer Device
Meta announced that it will be dropping support for several iPhones, or more specifically, those who can’t run anything beyond iOS 15.1.
Interestingly, the drop in device support was supposed to happen on the 5th of May, but since Meta was feeling generous, it pushed the date to the 1st of June, giving users plenty of time to sort out a newer device that supports WhatsApp.
So, if you have an iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, or iPhone 6 Plus, you can no longer use WhatsApp on your device. However, if you did take a backup of everything to iCloud, you can restore that to a newer iPhone and continue forward.
Alternatively, you can use the web version of WhatsApp too. Although not as convenient, it will give you enough time to sort out a new iPhone or Android phone in the meantime.
Meta has an entire article highlighting how you can move your iPhone chats to a newer device using the Chat Transfer feature. You can check it out here.
There are plenty of great iPhone choices out there that support the latest version of WhatsApp. You really don’t have to buy the latest one in order to keep up with your conversations.
Anything as old as the iPhone 12 will work out just fine for you.
While this isn’t good news for older iPhone model holders, at the same time, Meta released WhatsApp for iPad just a few days back. A version of the app that should have been released years ago.
