Apple in Partnership with Synchron is Working to Bring Mind-Control Support to iPhone, iPad and Other Devices
Apple has done a stellar job when it comes to Accessibility features for controlling devices like iPhone, iPad and Mac. Today, it announced a bunch of new ones for later this year too.
But, there’s a ton of room for improvement still.
According to a new report by The Wall Street Journal, Apple is going to allow users to control their devices using their mind alone. This is made possible with a partnership with a company called Synchron.
Synchron specializes in creating an implant called a Stentrode that creates a link between the user’s brain and a computer, also known as a BCI. If you’ve ever read about Neuralink, then you already know what this is.
However, the implant Synchron is going to use isn’t as advanced as Neuralink. It’s good enough for basic interfacing, but it won’t allow a user to perform extremely complex tasks.
Once implanted, users with motor disabilities will be able to control their Apple devices hands-free, and hopefully this method of device access will be way faster compared to everything available today.
It remains to be seen how much this will cost and how exactly it will work, if it actually launches later this year. Given the complexity, I’m sure Apple is going to take its time to polish this feature as much as possible before making it available for people.
