OpenAI and Jony Ive’s AI Hardware is Like an iPod Shuffle that You Wear Around the Neck with Built-in Cameras and Microphones

Jony Ive and Sam Altman ruffled a lot of feathers in the tech space with their partnership announcement. They announced that they would be working on AI-powered hardware, but didn’t quite say what it was.

At this point, we can only guess what the device might be like.

But, Ming-Chi Kuo has jumped in with a bunch of details regarding this device and the details don’t paint a great picture at all. I’ll just say that the only thing that might save this device is OpenAI and Jony Ive’s name, nothing else.

According to Ming-Chi Kuo, the device Jony Ive is working on resembles an iPod Shuffle, which is intended to be worn around the neck. There isn’t going to be any display on this device at all.

Users will have to use their iPhone or computer to interact with it visually.

The device will have a bunch of cameras and microphones to ‘detect’ the environment around it. I’m only going to assume that this device will let users ‘rewind’ their day in order to recall stuff and record things on the fly.

For example, you came across a document at some point in the day, and you can just ask the AI device what it was about, and it will just pull it up for you.

I’m just speculating here, nothing more.

The AI device will be assembled outside of China, and the likely place of manufacture will be Vietnam. And, mass production is expected to happen in 2027.

While I’m sure the underlying software is going to be from OpenAI, which will make this device great, the hardware itself sounds so similar to the awful Humane AI Pin.

Rabbit R1 and Humane AI Pin are tried and tested products that didn’t work out at all. I am very eager to see how OpenAI’s hardware will do the same thing, yet differently.

On the other hand, I am assuming that this device is intended to be worn and forgotten, and when you do need it, it will do its job in the best possible way, thanks to the power of AI.

I really want to see how Apple is going to react to all of this. I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s an element to this which favors Apple in a lot of ways too. After all, Apple does have a solid partnership with OpenAI when it comes to Apple Intelligence.
