You can stop the Safari web browser on your Mac from automatically opening files when they are done downloading. Here’s how.
Annoyed by Safari Opening Downloaded Files Automatically? You Can Turn this Feature Off
By default, whenever you download something using Safari, it will open up the moment it’s done. But of course, this is only done for files that are marked as ‘safe.’
This includes stuff like movies, pictures, sounds, text documents, and archives. Obviously, none of these files can even be disguised to cause harm, right?
Whether it’s for security or you feel it’s an extremely annoying feature, you will be pleased to learn that you can turn it off, and all it takes is a couple of clicks too.
Step 1. Launch Safari on your Mac.
Step 2. Now click on Safari on the top left in the menu bar.
Step 3. Now click on Settings.

Step 4. Under the General tab you’ll see the “Open ‘safe’ files after downloading” option. Just uncheck it.

From now on, whenever you download anything from Safari, it won’t automatically open.
This is perhaps one of the most annoying features in Safari since it can really interfere with your workflow if you have multiple files on download, and they decide to finish up at the same time.
It’s like fireworks going off without warning.
But I’m really grateful that this feature can be turned off, and I’m certain a lot of people have it turned off too if they already know about it.
Out of the box, a lot of software doesn’t play nicely with the user. You really have to fight with it to make sure it is exactly how you want it to be. Turning off certain features, or maybe turning on some of them, is the way to go.
In the end, you’re left with an experience that is perfect for you.
