A new report says Apple is looking into OpenAI or Anthropic to power the next version of Siri, and this is going to be a huge deal.
Apple in Talks with OpenAI or Anthropic to Power Next Advanced Version of Siri, Sidelining Internal Efforts
Post-WWDC was all about Apple executives answering questions about Siri and why the assistant didn’t get the promised features from last year.
Apple wants more time to refine the experience and only deliver the advanced version of Siri when it’s up to the level of quality it thinks is right for its customers.
But, a new report by Bloomberg says Apple might just tap into OpenAI or Anthropic to power the new Siri, sidelining its internal efforts completely.
Apple wants a customized version of an LLM from either OpenAI or Anthropic that can run on its Private Cloud Compute. This means these LLMs will offer better security and keep user data secure since they are not running on third-party servers.
Internal testing shows Anthropic’s model is better suited for Siri, and even performs better than what Apple has made so far in-house.
Apple even held talks with Anthropic on a corporate level, but Anthropic is asking for a huge multi-billion-dollar compensation that only gets bigger with every passing year.
While this news might sound great for consumers, but reportedly it’s not sitting well with Apple employees who have spent countless hours working on their own model for Siri.
If this deal does go through, it will only show that Apple’s work in the field of AI is years behind compared to everyone else.
I would rather have Apple delay Siri and deliver something original than tap into a third-party AI model for everything. We’ve waited this long; a few more months isn’t going to ruffle any more feathers.
