iMovie for Mac hasn’t received an update in over a year. Today, Apple has released an update for it which basically includes nothing.

An Year Later, iMovie Gets an Update on the Mac with Zero New Features – Just Bug Fixes

For most people, iMovie is more than enough for basic video editing. In fact, I edit all my social media content using iMovie, and so far, I have no complaints, except one.

Apple has neglected iMovie like it doesn’t belong in the software lineup. It’s been over a year since the app received any sort of update on the Mac, and that says a lot.

Today, Apple is hoping to keep people in the loop with the release of version 10.4.4 of the app on the Mac. The changes? Absolutely nothing, just bug fixes.

There is no Liquid Glass update. Not a single change to the UI. Heck, even the icon hasn’t changed, even though the Creator Studio focuses a lot on a major redesign.

The great thing about iMovie is that it’s completely free to download and use from the Mac App Store. But given the slow pace of updates, it feels like Apple really wants you to get that Creator Studio subscription and bump things up to Final Cut Pro.

Sure, the subscription is great value at $12.99 a month, but only if you’re actually making money using it and paying for the subscription with that money.

If you’re just trimming some clips and adjusting contrast, iMovie is the way to go.

But the big question is: when will Apple get rid of iMovie completely and push users towards Final Cut Pro or Creator Studio entirely? If Apple does plan to do that, maybe move the basic video editing features from iMovie to the Photos app first?
