Released back in 2017, the Clips app by Apple is shutting down and won’t receive further updates on iPhone and iPad.
8 Years Later, Apple’s Clips App for iPhone and iPad is Shutting Down Completely
A handful of developers have made a video recording and editing app for iPhone and iPad, but very few have seen some sort of success. Even Apple couldn’t resonate with users through its Clips app despite having a ton of great features.
Ultimately, built-in tools in apps like Instagram and TikTok won creators over and Clips was ultimately lost to time, never to see an update for a long time.
Today, Apple has published an article on its website a while back explaining that Clips won’t be seeing any new update at all, and will continue to work with iOS 26 and iPadOS 26, if you already have it installed on your iPhone and iPad.
If you’re installing Clips for the first time, then you’re completely out of luck as Apple has removed it from the App Store. But you can re-download it if it’s already sitting in your past downloads library, and that won’t likely last a long time either.
Quick honestly, I loved Clips and there are a ton of videos sitting in my library that I recorded using it. The ability to record in the square format makes things so much fun, and you end up getting that Vine-like vibe, especially when you start adding effects to your videos.
At one point, I believed Clips might receive generative AI features and finally take on apps like Edits from Instagram. But clearly, that didn’t happen, and will never ever happen going forward.
At the time of writing, even iMovie is eating dust in the App Store. I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple pulls the plug on it too, rather than introducing new and exciting features for it.
