A new report sheds light on the chips Apple is currently working on, including the M6, M7, and a bunch of other extremely high-end ones.
Report Sheds Light on Apple’s Future Plans Regarding its Chips – M6 and M7 Already in the Works Alongside AI Server Chips
Apple’s dive into the world of silicon was a serious one. Instead of focusing on one chip at a time, the company is actively working on multiple ones.
The rollout of M4 chips isn’t even complete yet, because the Mac Pro still ships with M2 Ultra, but there’s no way to tell if it is going to skip the M4 entirely in favor of the M5.
That being said, Apple is currently working on future chips for its devices, according to a report by Bloomberg. These chips also include processors for the upcoming Apple smart glasses too.
According to the report, Apple is working on the following:
- M6 codenamed ‘Komodo.’
- M7 codenamed ‘Borneo.’
- Unknown high-end Mac chips codenamed ‘Sotra.’
- AI server chips codenamed ‘Baltra.’
While M6 and M7 are the chips consumers will look forward to the most, the chips Apple plans to make for its servers have my attention. Because these chips are going to be the first of its kind, designed for artificial intelligence capabilities in mind.
These chips will be designed to handle Apple Intelligence requests.
Apple is also reportedly working on extremely high-end Mac chips that will put the M3 Ultra to shame with a beastly amount of CPU and GPU cores. Up to 8 times more, to be more exact.
The M5 chip will start rolling out later this year, likely starting from devices like iPad Pro and MacBook Pro. And if current rollout plans are anything to go by, we can expect the M5 to make its way to other devices in 2026.
