Here’s how you can force your iPhone to use 5G network only whenever you’re using data or making calls.

Go Full Speed and Force Your iPhone to Use 5G Only Whenever Using Data or Making Calls

Apple brought 5G to the iPhone lineup with the release of iPhone 12. Over time, 5G itself has seen a lot of improvement too, with the inclusion of features like VoNR (Voice over New Radio).

What this means is, if your network supports it, you can make voice calls over 5G as well, ensuring that your iPhone does not roll back to an older technology such as 3G or 4G LTE just for a voice call.

If you’re all about that 5G life and want to make sure your iPhone uses the fastest possible speeds all the time, you can do that too.

By default, your iPhone is set to ‘5G Auto’ which is the best option for most people. It will switch between 4G LTE and 5G intelligently, ensuring you get the best mix of performance and battery life.

But, if you want your iPhone to use 5G only, here’s what you need to do:

Step 1. Launch the Settings app.

Step 2. Tap on Cellular at the top.

Step 3. Under SIMs, select the name of your carrier to see more information.

Step 4. Now tap on Voice & Data.

Step 5. Select 5G On.

Your iPhone is now going to use 5G only whenever it’s available and not roll back to 4G LTE or 3G for anything, even if it’s in sleep mode.

Do I recommend doing this? Well, it depends on your needs, really. I think Apple’s 5G Auto default setting is fine for most people and no-one needs to sway away from it.

You really don’t need 5G speeds all the time, especially when your iPhone is sitting idle on a table. Unless, you have a truly unlimited data plan and want to make the most of it.
