Meta has announced a new AI-powered message summaries feature for unread messages in WhatsApp on iPhone.

WhatsApp for iPhone will Now Use AI to Summarize All of Your Unread Text Messages

Catching up on text message conversations can be a bit of a task, especially if your friends, family, or coworkers left a ton of messages in your absence.

Realizing this issue, Meta has announced an AI-powered feature called ‘Message Summaries.’

Meta says this feature uses Private Processing technology to keep your data and conversations private, and no one will be able to see the generated summaries except you.

The way this works is actually quite simple too. Whenever you open a text message thread, just tap on the ‘unread messages’ notification at the top, and Meta AI will immediately get to work and summarize the messages for you.

This feature is currently available in English, that too in the United States. But Meta says that it is working to bring it to other countries and languages later this year.

AI has been a hit or miss when it comes to summarizing stuff like this, and I’m not sure how accurate Meta AI is going to be in WhatsApp. However, given the amount of improvement AI has seen in the past few months, I’m sure it’s good enough to get a gist of the unread conversation.

Lastly, this feature is entirely optional. You actually have to turn it on if you want to use it by going to Advanced Chat Privacy settings. Not only that, you also have to select which conversations can go through AI processing for summaries.
