Apple has announced the new MacBook Pro powered by the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. These notebooks are incredibly powerful.
MacBook Pro Takes Giant Leap Forward with M5 Pro and M5 Max Chips, Features 2x Faster SSDs and 1TB Minimum Storage
The 14-inch M5 MacBook Pro has been around for quite some time. But the M5 Pro and M5 Max models were nowhere to be seen, including the 16-inch model.
Today, Apple has officially announced the M5 Pro and M5 Max models of the MacBook Pro, and these notebooks are lightning fast and a huge upgrade for those who are hanging on to their older M1 Pro MacBook Pro.
Design
In terms of design, nothing has changed at all. If you put the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro side by side, you won’t be able to tell any difference at all. The biggest changes lie within the MacBook Pro.
Double the Storage, Twice as Fast
The 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro notebooks now ship with double the storage. Both sizes ship with a 1TB SSD as standard, while the M5 Max model ships with a 2TB SSD.
Apple says these SSDs are twice as fast than before, and they’re able to hit speeds of up to 14.5GB/s.
M5 Pro and M5 Max
Apple says the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips are based on the company’s Fusion architecture and offer tremendous performance boost compared to previous chips.
Apple is touting big numbers when compared to previous chips, and here’s what it has to say about the M5 Pro:
Up to 7.8x faster AI image generation performance when compared to MacBook Pro with M1 Pro, and up to 3.7x faster than MacBook Pro with M4 Pro.
Up to 6.9x faster LLM prompt processing when compared to MacBook Pro with M1 Pro, and up to 3.9x faster than MacBook Pro with M4 Pro.
Up to 5.2x faster 3D rendering in Maxon Redshift when compared to MacBook Pro with M1 Pro, and up to 1.4x faster than MacBook Pro with M4 Pro.
Up to 1.6x faster gaming performance with ray tracing in games like Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition when compared to MacBook Pro with M4 Pro.
M5 Max offers massive performance gains as well, and here’s what Apple has to say about it:
Up to 8x faster AI image generation performance when compared to MacBook Pro with M1 Max, and up to 3.8x faster than MacBook Pro with M4 Max.
Up to 6.7x faster LLM prompt processing when compared to MacBook Pro with M1 Max, and up to 4x faster than MacBook Pro with M4 Max.
Up to 5.4x faster video effects rendering performance in Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve Studio when compared to MacBook Pro with M1 Max, and up to 3x faster than MacBook Pro with M4 Max.
Up to 3.5x faster AI video-enhancing performance in Topaz Video when compared to MacBook Pro with M4 Max.
N1 Comes to the MacBook Pro
Apple’s own N1 wireless chip comes to the MacBook Pro, which means Wi-Fi 7 now comes as standard along with Bluetooth 6 and Thread.
Apple says the N1 chip offers more reliable wireless connections, and users should see improved Wi-Fi performance in day-to-day tasks.
Price and Availability
You can pre-order the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max on the 4th of March, and you can pick them up in stores on the 11th of March.
