The Apple silicon-powered iMac is set to get a huge upgrade as a new report suggests that Apple is working on a model with an OLED display.
Apple Working with Samsung and LG Display to Bring OLED to the 24-inch iMac, Releasing in 2027
The current iMac is nice and sweet. It has a 4.5K LCD panel, which works fine for the average user, but if you want a better display, then you definitely have to look elsewhere.
According to a report by The Elec, Apple is working to bring OLED technology to the iMac, and the new display will feature a brightness of 600 nits as well. Compared to the current iMac model with LCD, this is a 20% improvement, and I’ll explain later why that’s important.
Apple is said to be working closely with Samsung Display and LG Display for the panels, and it will be a while before we see an iMac with OLED on it. The report says Apple is going to release its new desktop with an upgraded display in 2027.
The switch from OLED might not be noticeable to the average user. But if you have a keen eye for contrast and HDR content, then this upgrade is going to be massive.
Sure, the 600 nits peak brightness might not sound like a lot when compared to something like an iPhone 17 Pro or even the iPad Pro, but at the 24-inch size, 600 nits is plenty bright.
It remains to be seen if there are hidden details behind this report as well. For example, will the OLED upgrade be available across the board, or will it be an optional upgrade? And, is the upgrade limited to the rumored ‘iMac Pro’ desktop only?
So many questions, and a lot of years to answer them.
