The Mac Pro makes no sense in 2025, nor 2026. It’s time for Apple to completely retire it and focus on small and powerful Mac form factors.
Announced Back in 2019, the Mac Pro Design Makes no Sense in Apple’s Hardware Lineup – it’s Time to Retire it
A recent report by Mark Gurman says that Apple has ‘largely written off’ the Mac Pro, and an upgrade to it is not the company’s priority at the moment.
His report says that Apple is currently focusing on the Mac Studio with the M5 Ultra upgrade for it. Basically, Apple wants to ship a ton of firepower in a portable form factor instead. And I believe that’s the right thing to do going forward.
With the transition to its own silicon, Apple started to ship form factors that weren’t possible with Intel chips in them. The Mac Pro, on the other hand, feels like a long tether that keeps a part of the Mac lineup in Apple’s Intel-only days. This really needs to change.
We truly live in an era of portable computing. Even desktop computers like the Mac mini and Mac Studio are small enough to fit inside a backpack and taken anywhere when needed. The Mac Pro offers none of that, and even if Apple does decide to upgrade it with a faster chip, you can still get similar performance in a smaller form factor.
