A new report says that Apple is working on bringing 5G internet support to iPhone 18 Pro, and folding iPhone using satellites.
Apple Rumored to Bring 5G Internet to iPhone 18 Pro and Folding iPhone Using Satellites
If you want to use internet beamed down from space, your options are very limited and can be mostly narrowed down to hardware sold by Starlink. But if the latest report from The Information is anything to go by, the iPhone 18 is going to join the party as well.
According to the report, Apple is adding support for 5G internet using satellites, negating the need to connect to a nearby cell tower, in certain situations only, I’m going to assume.
The first models from Apple with support for 5G via satellite are going to be the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and Apple’s new folding iPhone. It’s unclear whether or not the standard iPhone 18 will include support for 5G via satellite as well.
Do keep in mind that the standard iPhone 18 model is set to go on sale the year after the iPhone 18 Pro and folding iPhone go on sale.
While the iPhone does support some satellite features, such as emergency SOS, Find My, and the ability to send text messages, using full-blown internet using a satellite connection is not possible today.
It’s highly likely that Apple is working on a deal behind the scenes with companies like Starlink in order to make this a reality. Currently, Apple has a good working relationship with Globalstar for its satellite features. Adding Starlink to the mix makes a lot of sense, except that Elon Musk isn’t on good terms with Apple.
But who knows, this is the thing that finally brings Apple and SpaceX together.
