Leaked code from Apple suggests that the company is working on a cellular MacBook Pro, powered by C1 modem and M5 Pro.
Apple is Working on a MacBook Pro with 5G Cellular Connectivity, Powered by the M5 Pro and C1 Modem
Macworld was able to peek inside internal Apple code and saw that the company is working on a MacBook Pro with cellular capabilities.
A report from Bloomberg from earlier this year said that Apple is planning to integrate the modem with the main chipset, allowing the company to bring cellular capabilities to devices that don’t have it.
Keeping that in mind, and the fact that Apple has its own modem with C1, it just makes sense that the company would bring cellular to its Mac lineup as well.
According to the code, the MacBook Pro Apple is currently testing cellular on is powered by the M5 Pro chip, and the modem is the C1. Clearly, the device will offer sub-6GHz connectivity right out of the box.
However, I believe Apple is just testing the hardware at this point in time, and may release a notebook with cellular sometime later once it has perfected the technology for use on a Mac.
If the code hints at a cellular Mac, then it is likely happening, but with the M5 Pro-powered MacBook Pro? I wish it does, because it will give users something to look forward to apart from the usual faster chip upgrade.
For me, it’s a huge upgrade. As someone who only buys cellular iPads, a cellular Mac makes perfect sense. A Mac that stays online all the time and doesn’t rely on Wi-Fi at all is just icing on the cake.
