Apple is dropping support for Time Machine backups created using AirPort Time Capsule with macOS 27.

Apple Time Capsule Won’t be Able to Create Time Machine Backups with macOS 27

The AirPort Time Capsule is a great way to back up your Mac at home. However, the AirPort Time Capsule was discontinued back in 2018, and Apple is dropwping support for it next year alongside the release of macOS 27.

According to StellaFudge on X, Apple shows a warning in System Settings telling users that the next ‘major version of macOS’ is dropping support for Time Machine backups created using Apple Time Capsule.

Basically, Apple is dropping support for Apple Filing Protocol in favor of SMBv2 and SMBv3.

If you do want to keep on using Time Machine and want to keep your AirPort router with you, then you may want to invest in a storage solution that supports SMBv2 or SMBv3.

Rather than complicate things, it’s just a better idea to invest in a newer Wi-Fi router that supports Time Machine backups by connecting an external drive to it. It’s fast, it’s simple, and very reliable.

The good news is that the ‘Wi-Fi’ part of AirPort Time Capsule will keep on working as you go forward.
