Apple is going to announce macOS 26 just a few days from now, and it will reportedly be called ‘Tahoe.’
macOS 26 will be Named After Lake Tahoe in California, Marking the Big Redesign Apple is Set to Show Off
Of course, apart from the big redesign, I’m sure a lot of people, including myself, are curious about the name Apple is going to give its desktop operating system.
Mark Gurman from Bloomberg has weighed in on the situation with an interesting little report, and says that the company has settled on macOS Tahoe for its next big thing for the Mac.
In case you’re wondering if that name sounds familiar, it’s because it is. Apple is naming macOS 26 after Lake Tahoe in California, which is a stunning place on Earth and a home for many Apple employees as well.
The reason why Apple has chosen this name is pretty interesting too. The report says Lake Tahoe beautifully reflects the sky and mountains, which represents the visual redesign Apple is going with for the Mac this year.
In case you’re thrown off by the macOS ’26’ version number, don’t be. Apple is going to change the way it numbers its OS releases in favor of something more consistent going forward.
This year, there isn’t going to be iOS 19, iPadOS 19, macOS 16, watchOS 12, tvOS 19, and visionOS 3. Instead, everything will be 26.
