With rumors of a MacBook powered by A18 Pro coming in hot today, references to it in Apple code have been around for a while.
Reference to MacBook with A18 Pro was First Found an Year Ago, According to a New Report
MacRumors made this discovery last year in the backend code related to Apple Intelligence. Not only does this confirm the MacBook with the A18 Pro chip, but it also confirms the fact that Apple has been working on it for quite a while too.
The new Mac has the identifier ‘Mac17,1’ and it will be Apple’s first-ever Mac that will be powered by a chip that is meant for iPhone, and not the M-series chip found in current lineup of Macs.
We usually don’t think about it much, but it’s crazy how a chip that lives inside the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max is powerful enough to run an entire Mac. And if this computer manages to deliver the exact same performance as a Mac with M1, it will be a huge deal.
Using an iPhone chip inside a Mac will definitely translate to great battery life since the A18 Pro isn’t a power-hungry chip at all. After all, it’s meant for a phone, not an entire computer, which also means better thermal performance.
The ultimate make-or-break moment for this new MacBook will be its price. If Apple manages to hit a low price of somewhere around $799, it will be a great deal. If it’s near the $899 mark, it’s best to get something like the M4 MacBook Air instead.
The report that talked about the MacBook with A18 Pro from today says this new computer will go into production either at the end of this year or in early 2026. Therefore, we have plenty of time to speculate what Apple might have in store for us.
