A new report says that Apple is working to bring solid-state buttons to the iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch models in the future.

Apple is Planning to Bring Solid-State Buttons to iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch in Future Models

Apple’s move to a solid-state Home button with the iPhone 7 was an interesting move. It gave us hope that Apple would do the same thing for volume buttons as well on iPhone.

So, 8 and a half years later, the Home button is gone, and the iPhone still has regular volume, power, and Action buttons.

According to Instant Digital on Weibo, Apple’s project to bring haptic, solid-state buttons for the iPhone is still in the pipeline.

But, it is not limited to iPhone; Apple wants to bring solid-state buttons to all of its devices, which also includes the iPad and Apple Watch.

If I’m to take a guess, it’s likely that this feature will be a part of the 20th-anniversary iPhone, since that is the device which is said to have a complex design.

According to Instant Digital, the reason why Apple has been holding back from solid-state buttons is an interesting one.

The chance of a ‘mis-touch’ is high with a solid-state button.

But then again, how many times did we have issues with the solid-state Home button on the iPhone 7 all the way to the last iPhone SE?

I’m only going to assume that a solid-state set of buttons isn’t Apple’s immediate priority, hence it’s keeping it on hold for a future model instead.

While it makes sense these buttons would work just fine on iPhone and Apple Watch, thanks to the Taptic Engine, it makes me wonder how Apple is going to replicate the ‘haptic feedback’ on iPad.
