Wondering whether you can charge your USB-C Apple Pencil with an adapter or should you stick to iPad only? Let Apple answer this for you.

Apple Says it’s Fine to Charge Your USB-C Apple Pencil with a Power Adapter

The USB-C version of the Apple Pencil is a fine way to start scribbling on iPad without putting a dent on your wallet.

The only inconvenience that comes with this version of Apple Pencil is pretty obvious: you have to charge it up using a USB-C cable.

You can’t charge it wirelessly like Apple Pencil 2 or Apple Pencil Pro.

If you’re out and about and want to charge up your USB-C Apple Pencil, you would simply plug one end of the cable into your iPad and the other end into Apple Pencil.

Charging begins immediately.

While that’s the way most of us are going to charge the USB-C Apple Pencil, you must be wondering whether or not you can charge the accessory up using a USB-C power adapter instead.

Some say you can, some say you shouldn’t because it may damage the Apple Pencil.

But, what does Apple say about it?

According to a support document published by Apple, you can charge the USB-C Apple Pencil using a power adapter. No need to plug it into the iPad if you don’t want to.

You can also charge Apple Pencil using the USB-C charge cable and power adapter that came with your iPad.

Apple is very specific in its document and says you can charge up the Apple Pencil using the charger that came with your iPad. It doesn’t mention whether or not you can use a third-party charger.

But given how the USB-C charging protocol works and how meticulously Apple follows it, it’s safe to say you can use any high-quality 20W USB-C charger to charge up the Apple Pencil.
