A future iPhone model is getting a 200-megapixel camera sensor, but details are somewhat sparse regarding this.
Apple is Working to Bring a 200-Megapixel Camera Sensor to iPhone in a Future Mode
Digital Chat Station has jumped into the scene once again with an interesting bit of information. According to the leaker, a future iPhone model will ship with an extremely high-resolution camera sensor; 200-megapixel to be exact.
While this is stunning news, the report does not say which iPhone model will get this high-resolution sensor.
All reports say that Apple is going to ship the iPhone 17 Pro with three 48-megapixel cameras, making things way more consistent when it comes to resolution.
There is a chance Apple might give the megapixel upgrade to the iPhone 18 or maybe even the 20th-anniversary iPhone, which is rumored to get an all-screen design.
A bump in megapixels immediately means way sharper images and high-resolution video. But, a sensor with this resolution does come with a bunch of tradeoffs, especially low-light performance.
However, given the amount of improvements we’ve seen in computational photography, I don’t think grain in low-light conditions is even going to be a problem.
If Apple offers a 2x ‘optical’ zoom using the main 48-megapixel camera on iPhone, the 200-megapixel camera is like having an expensive telephoto lens right in your pocket.
In fact, with a resolution that big, I don’t see why Apple would even want to ship the iPhone with a telephoto lens anymore when cropping in can achieve the same effect.
