Apple is going to announce four new iPhones this year, which are going to be part of the iPhone 17 lineup.

iPhone 17? iPhone 17 Pro Max? iPhone 17 Ultra? How Will Apple Tackle the Naming Schemes this Year?

Will Apple follow the conventional naming scheme this year, or will it take an approach that is a mix of iPad, Mac and Apple Watch?

First of all, let’s see what the rumors say.

The one phone that is definitely going to have the most obvious name is the standard model. The one that sits at the very bottom when it comes to price. That one is going to be called the iPhone 17.

Interestingly, there’s no opposition to that name at all from anyone so far, therefore we can move on quite easily from here.

Rumors say Apple is going to drop the ‘Plus’ model in favor of a phone that is entirely different. A phone that is going to be super duper thin.

That phone is expected to be called the iPhone 17 Air, or maybe even the iPhone 17 Slim, if we want to think ‘outside the box.’

However, I believe the latter is extremely unlikely as it does not go well with the naming scheme which Apple uses for other devices, such as iPad Air and MacBook Air.

Here is where things start to get interesting.

The ‘Pro’ model will still make an appearance this year, but with a huge camera bump at the back. It will likely be called the iPhone 17 Pro, if anything else. And, no one has opposed that name so far because it has been a long running tradition at this point.

There is a chance that this is going to be the only ‘Pro’ iPhone in the lineup, and you’ll know why.

A recent rumor touched on something very, very interesting. Rather than just going ahead with iPhone 17 Pro Max, Apple might take a slightly different approach with its larger iPhone this year.

This phone’s name won’t be a word salad either. Apple might keep things simpler than before..

So, with that in mind, this is what the lineup will look like from bottom to top:

  • iPhone 17
  • iPhone 17 Air
  • iPhone 17 Pro
  • iPhone 17 Ultra

While this is all speculation, this lineup makes way more sense this year compared to what Apple has been doing since the iPhone 14 days.

Instead of having an iPhone 17 Pro Max, the iPhone 17 Ultra makes it easier people to know what they are buying into – an iPhone with everything pushed to the limit, including the display, battery, camera and performance.

What do you think? Will Apple go with the iPhone 17 Pro Max instead, or will it bump it up to iPhone 17 Ultra?
